Reunite to wage demo, Fakhrul tells party men
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called upon the party men to reunite to wage movement for a fresh national election.
“Public interest like rightful share of the Teesta water will not be ensured until a government elected by the people is established,” Fakhrul said.
He was addressing a rally held at Hatibandha helipad adjacent to the Teesta Barrage in Lalmonirhat this afternoon ending a two-day long march towards Teesta Barrage.
The long march was organised to put pressure on the government for the fair share of Teesta water.
While addressing the rally, Fakhrul also urged the neighbouring India to ensure 10,000 cusecs of water to Bangladesh from the Teesta River to maintain good relations between the two countries.
He said the Awami League-led government has assumed power illegally. An organised movement is needed to oust the government, he said.
It does not want to make those (India) unhappy who have helped it to assume power through illegal means, he said.
Earlier in the afternoon, around 4,000 party leaders and activists of BNP reached Dalia point of Teesta Barrage in Lalmonirhat this afternoon.
Prior to start for the barrage around 10:00am, the party men held a brief rally on the premises of Rangpur Town Hall with Mozaffar Hossain, BNP convener of the district unit, in the chair.
At the rally, Fakhrul said, “Due share of Teesta water is our rights by birth. We are fighting for the rights. We are not wagging any movement against the Bangladesh and Indian governments.”
“Our environmental and ecological balance is at risk. Specially, our farmer and fishermen have become victims of the adverse impact of the barrage,” he said.
“We along with the victims and people from all walks of life have started the movement to ensure the equitable share of water of the river,” he added.
The party men started the two-day long march towards Teesta Barrage from Dhaka yesterday, demanding fair share of the river water.
