Pakistan spinner Abdur Rehman earned an unwanted place in cricket history with unprecedented figures of 0-0-8-0 against Bangladesh in Asia Cup today.
Rehman conceded eight runs without bowling a single legal delivery after he was brought on by Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq in the 11th over of the innings against Imrul Kayes.
His first delivery was a beamer – a shoulder-high full-toss -- outside off-side which wicketkeeper Umar Akmal grabbed with much effort.
Rehman’s second ball was a waist-high full-toss that Kayes slapped to deep midwicket, where the fielder caught him off the no-ball and the batsmen sneaked a run.
As per ICC regulations, a bowler is barred from bowling again in an ODI match if he bowls two beamers in the same innings.
ICC’s regulations are, however, less harsh for slow bowlers, as its Law 42.6 (b) (ii) states: “A slow delivery which passes or would have passed on the full above shoulder height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease is to be deemed dangerous and unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker.”
Due to this, the umpire allowed Rehman to continue bowling, and the spinner bowled a third consecutive no-ball above shoulder-height to be taken off the attack immediately.
What made Rehman’s day even worse was that the third ball was struck for four by Anamul Haque, giving the bowler an unprecedented figure of 8 runs from 0 balls bowled in the innings.
This is the third instance of a bowler being banned due to bowling two beamers in the same innings in this year’s asia Cup, the other two being India’s Varun Aaron and Afghanistan’s Shapoor Zadran.
