Ray's Tarini Khuro set for Bollywood debut

Not too many people outside Bengal would have heard of Tarini Ranjan Bandopadhyay, the fictional character penned by Satyajit Ray. But Tarini Khuro, as he is popularly known, is gearing up all for a celluloid debut. The character will be seen in Ananth Mahadevan's Hindi film “The Storyteller”, with Paresh Rawal playing the bachelor with a love for telling adventure stories.
“When the Feluda series, 'Satyajit Ray Presents', was playing on TV in the late 80s, I had wanted to make a film on Feluda, and had approached his son Sandip for the rights to one of the stories. But he wasn't willing to part with them at the time,” says Ananth.
More recently, Tapobrati Das, a documentary filmmaker, shared Ray's fascinating short story, “Golpoboliye Tarini Khuro”, with Ananth who instantly wanted to take it to the big screen.
“It's Ray meets Hitchcock, in a quaint manner, with two delightful twists in the tale. It is one of the few Tarini stories grounded in reality, without a touch of the supernatural,” he explains.
Once he acquired the rights to the story -- which revolved around Khuro and a Gujarati businessman, Ananth approached Paresh Rawal with the second role.
“To my surprise Paresh didn't want to play the Gujarati, pointing out that this would be stereotyped casting, and asked if he could play Khuro instead,” says Ananth, who instantly agreed and is now looking for an actor to play the businessman as well as the supporting cast.
“I've been working on the screenplay, we've adapted the original story into a 100-minute film which should roll around March 2014. I'd like to catch the Berlin Film Festival or at least premiere it at Cannes in 2015 since Ray is a revered name there,” he says.
