Rape of Marma girl sparks protest in Khagrachhari

A human chain was formed in the district town yesterday, demanding exemplary punishment to a culprit who raped a 21-year-old girl of the Marma Community on Wednesday.
The district unit of Hill Women's Federation (HWF) organised the programme at Changhi Square in the town.
The participants in the rally urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure security of hill women.
Among others, Barun Chakma, leader of Democratic Youth Forum (DYF), Ratan Chakma, leader of Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP), and Abonika Chakma, leader of HWF, spoke at the rally.
Bikash Barua of Pankhaiyapara village allegedly raped the Marma girl at his house at the village. Receiving complaint from the victim, locals caught the the rapist and handed him over to the police, said Mizanur Rahman, officer in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station. A case was filed with the police, station, accusing Bikash Barua.
Police sent the girl Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital for medical test on the day, said the OC.
