Rajshahi Shibir men protest Nizami death penalty

Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, brought out a procession and hurled a handmade bomb in Rajshahi city protesting the capital punishment awarded to the Jamaat chief.

Police fired 20 rubber bullets to disperse the activists but none was hurt, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.

A special court in Chittagong today handed death penalty to Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami along with 13 other accused for smuggling in 10 truckloads of firearms in 2004.

Soon after the judgement, around 60 Shibir men brought out the procession at Beldarpara around 1:30pm protesting the verdict against Nizami, said Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Boalia Police Station.

On information, Boalia police rushed the spot and fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, said the OC.

In face of police resistance, the activists blasted a crude bomb targeting the law enforcers and left the scene, he added.
