Rajshahi college teacher killed in ‘shootout’

Detectives claim he was ‘controller’ of Jamaat-Shibir armed cadres

A college teacher was killed during a “shootout” involving detectives in Rajshahi city early today.
Nurul Islam, 45, a teacher of Islamia Degree College, was a “controller” of armed cadres belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, said Iftekhar Alam, assistant commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
He was also the owner of Padma Printing Press in Rajshahi, the police officer said.
However, the official did not disclose further details about the shootout. “All the details will be disclosed through a press briefing later in the day,” the RMP official said.
The gunfight took place near Motihari Police Station during the early hours today, our Rajshahi correspondent reports quoting police.
Talking to The Daily Star, victim’s elder brother Fazlul Haque said Nurul was picked up from his press last night.
Fazlul claimed that he along with the family members went to the detective branch of police office at night. They were told that Nurul was in detectives’ custody and would be produced before a court today, he said.
The family came to know that Nurul Islam’s death in a “shootout” when they got a phone call from Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the morning.   
Fazlul said they are not aware whether he was accused in any case but confirmed that his brother was involved with Jamaat politics.
He however failed to mention Nurul’s designation in the party, if there is any.
