Rab threatening me: Shahidul
The father-in-law of slain Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam has alleged that he was receiving threats from Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).
“Now, I am fearing for my life,” Shahidul Islam told reporters after giving his deposition before a government-formed probe body at Narayanganj Circuit House today on the second day of the mass hearing.
Shahidul however did not elaborate the claim when reporters inquired about the threat.
The man, who created a sensation by alleging that it was Rab men who killed Nazrul and six others after abduction on April 27 in exchange of Tk 6 crore from Siddhirganj Awami League leader Nur Hossain and a few others, also pointed out that a deep sense of insecurity and panic was prevailing as the accused have not been arrested.
"People do not dare to give deposition in fear of prime suspect Nur Hossain and his associates," he said.
Shahidul also threatened to wage movement if the three Rab members, who were forced to retire over the allegation of their involvement in the killings, are not arrested in two or three days.
"We still remain calm as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assured us of proper investigation into the incident," he added.
A seven-member probe body, which has been formed in line with a High Court order, started recording the deposition around 10:00am, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Only six people went to give deposition on the first day of the mass hearing on May 12.
On May 10, the committee headed by Md Shahjahan Ali Mollah recorded statements of family members and relatives of the seven victims.
Shahin Azad, one of the six who gave deposition on the first day, alleged that Siddhirganj Awami League leader Nur Hossain was behind the abduction and killing of the seven.
Hossain, who is loyal to local AL lawmaker Shamim Osman, might have taken the help of officials of Rapid Action Battalion, he said.
On April 27, seven people -- Nazrul Islam and his four associates and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver -- were kidnapped separately, but around the same time from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road. Six bodies were found in the Shitalakkhya river three days later and another the next day.
The other victims are: Moniruzzaman, Tajul Islam, Liton, Ibrahim, and Jahangir.
PROBE BODY’S PRESS BRIEFING
The probe body has decided to hold another public hearing on the abduction on killing on May 17.
The hearing will be held at Shiddhirganj Power Plant in Narayanganj instead of the district’s circuit house, the committee chief, Md Shahjahan, announced at a press briefing.
At least 36 people including Shahidul gave depositions before the probe body at the circuit till afternoon while 20 have been kept waiting, he told reporters around 2:15pm.
If necessary, the committee will interrogate the three Rab members who were forced to retire, he said.
“There is progress in probe but we will not make it public for the sake of the investigation," Md Shahjahan said.
