A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion yesterday sealed off yet another illegal factory in the capital that produced fake orsaline and market those in the name of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B).
The mobile court conducted a drive at Uttar Badda in the afternoon, and sentenced two people to different jail terms and fined three others.
Abdul Siddique, 35, owner of the unnamed factory, was given two-year jail term and fined Tk 1 lakh, while Nabin Khan, 26, brother of Siddique and sales manager of the factory, was given one-year jail and fined Tk 1 lakh.
Executive Magistrate Anwar Pasha, who led the drive, said the court also fined three employees -- Kabir Hossain, Mohammad Swapan and Masud Akan, with Tk 10,000 each.
Pasha said Siddique, a former employee of ICDDR,B, had started the factory renting a tin-roofed one-storey building in the area a year ago.
He used to collect fake packets of the orsaline from a printing press in Paltan, while his brother Nabin distributed the saline to different parts of the city.
The factory used to produce around 8,000 packets of orsaline each day. During the raid, Rab also seized a huge quantity of saline and raw materials.
On March 20, a Rab mobile court sealed off a similar illegal factory at Jumrail in Old Dhaka, and sentenced two people to different jail terms.
Experts said the fake orsaline made from rice would cause damage for kidney and liver.
