Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has launched a cyber-verification cell to tackle the ongoing spread of misinformation centring the coronavirus pandemic.

The cell will identify fake news and check up on rumours circulating on social media, Lt Col Sarwar Bin Quasem, director legal and media wing of Rab headquarters, said in a video conference today.

"If anyone sends any news or information to the cell, we will verify it after cross-checking," he said.

The media wing director also requested people to engage with the verification cell and use its services to cross-check dubious information.

The cell has already worked on some issues which included a Facebook photo post claiming there are dead bodies on the streets. They cross-checked, found the information to be false and posted about it on their page.

Rab has also arrested 10 people from different districts on charge of spreading rumours.

"We have also kept 50 other people under surveillance," he added.
