Rab cautions media

The Rapid Action Battalion yesterday issued a statement asking the media to refrain from publishing news involving the elite force "without proof".
"Some news media published misleading and untoward news, mentioning imaginary names of top Rab officials as being involved in the Narayanganj seven-murder incident," read the statement signed by Habibur Rahman, director of the legal and media wing of the force, on behalf of the Rab director general.
“Such motivated, imaginary and unsubstantiated news involving a well-disciplined force like the Rab is unexpected and unwarranted," it continued.
“We seek your cooperation in bolstering Rab activities by circulating justified and constructive news, instead of such baseless news, in future.”
Referring to the seven-murder incident, the Rab said, "The contents of the confessional statements given by the two dismissed Rab men under Section 164 are extremely confidential, bound to secrecy by the law. But within ten minutes of the confessional statement on June 4, a local lawyer told the media that a specific top official's name was mentioned in the statement as being involved in the incident”.
Terming the lawyer's action ill motivated, the elite force said, "Such baseless propaganda is aimed at defaming the Rab."
“If the name of any top official of the Rab headquarters crops up in the confessional statements, the probe teams will take legal measures against him after thorough investigation,” said the statement.
“Though it is only ethical for the press that it ask for a statement/comment from the parties concerned for publishing news on any issue, the Rab was not asked for anything as such, which is unethical, tragic and unprincipled,” the statement added.
