Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has suspended the registration of a physician for his gross misconducts and cheating with people.

It is Dr Shafiul Azam, who assaulted Prothom Alo Special Correspondent Shishir Morol at ZA Sikder Women's Medical College Hospital in the capital on May 13 this year.

“Dr Shafiul Azam’s registration [BM&DC Registration No- A-21933] has been suspended as per section 29 of BMDC Act, 2010 and section 6 of BMDC Code of Medical Ethics,” said a press release issued by BMDC today.

Shafiul Azam, head of the cardiology department, and Abu Sufian, an employee of the hospital, had slapped and kicked Shishir Morol and confined him to a room for over two hours.

Shishir had gone to the hospital to investigate an allegation that Shafiul Azam, an assistant professor at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), had been working fulltime at ZA Sikder Women's Medical College Hospital without taking leave from CMCH.

At a private chamber in Chittagong, the doctor also used his designation on a nameplate as assistant professor of CMCH and professor of Sikder Medical College Hospital, Dhaka.

Earlier, when he had sought comments on the matter from Azam over the phone, the doctor asked Shishir to meet him at the hospital. Accordingly, Shishir went to interview him, but faced the assault.

Following complaint of Shishir Morol, BMDC inquired it and found the allegations true.

“A qualified doctor cannot beat a journalist. It was a gross misconduct. So, we decided to suspend his registration,” BMDC President Prof Abu Shafi Ahmed said.
