Protests continue in Bangladesh

Bar Council urges suspension of Israel's UN membership

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Raushan Ershad yesterday condemned the Israeli air strikes killing innocent civilians in Gaza, while Bangladesh Bar Council urged the United Nations to suspend the membership of Israel until it stops the aggression.
In a statement, Raushan said as elsewhere in the world, the people of Bangladesh were "very astonished" at the massive attack being carried out in the month of Ramadan.
She urged the UN, Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), and other international bodies to come forward to stop the strikes in the Palestinian territory.
At least 172 people have been killed in Gaza Strip since the attack began on July 8.
Protesting the Israeli strikes, Bangladesh Labour Party yesterday brought out a procession in Jatiya Press Club area of the capital, led by the party's Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran.
In their brief speeches, after the procession, the BLP leaders called upon the international community to force Israel's government to stop the killings.
Addressing a press conference at its office in the capital, Khandker Mahbub Hossain, vice chairman of the Bar Council, announced that the lawyers would form human chains on all bar association premises across the country tomorrow to protest the aggression.
The killing of a huge number of innocents in Gaza is a violation of international human rights and laws, he said.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission expressed its worries over the killing of Palestinians, many of whom are children and women.
This is a threat to the peacekeeping initiatives in the Middle East since Israel does not obey the international laws, it said in a statement. The rights body urged the UN to take strict measures to immediately stop the aggression.
