President, PM place wreaths at National Memorial

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed floral wreaths at the National Martyrs Memorial here this morning marking the 44th Independence and National Day.

The President and the prime minister placed wreaths at the altar of the memorial around 6:00am.

After placing the wreaths, the President and the prime minister stood in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs of the Great War of Liberation in 1971.

The bugle played the last post and a smartly turned out contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented state salute on the occasion.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with the senior leaders of Bangladesh Awami League also placed wreaths at the National Memorial on behalf of her party.

Chief Justice, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Deputy Leader of the Parliament, Ministers, Advisers to the Prime Minister, State Ministers, chiefs of the three services, diplomats, high civil and military officials, freedom fighters, other dignitaries and senior leaders of Awami League were present.

Later, President Abdul Hamid signed the visitor's book at the memorial premises.
