Preserve Sir Jagadish Chandra Basu’s house: HC
The High Court today ordered the government to take step within seven days to protect and preserve the 300-year-old house of famed scientist Sir Jagadish Chandra Basu in Munshiganj.
In response to a writ petition, the court issued a rule upon the government to explain as to why it should not be directed to preserve the house as an archaeological site and to issue a gazette notification to the effect.
The High Court bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order after hearing the petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The organisation submitted the petition on November 26 saying that the ancestral house of Sir Jagadish Chandra Basu in Shrinagar upazila is a 300-year-old historical site but it is reportedly not being protected and preserved well and therefore it is being damaged.
According to antiquities act, any site or place should be protected as an archaeological site if it is over a hundred years old.
During hearing today, petitioner council Manzill Murshid prayed to the court to pass necessary order on the government to protect the residence of Sir Basu.
Director general of the Department of Archeology, deputy commissioner of Munshiganj and officer-in-charge of Shirnagar Police Station have been made respondents to the order and rule, Manzill Murshid told the Daily Star.
Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Saju represented the government.
