Port city under deluge

Chittagong city has come to a virtual standstill due to heavy rains over the last several days. Most of the city has become waterlogged that has severely disrupted normal life of the people.
Our administrators often tend to overlook the fact that Chittagong is not just another city where such a state can be endured hoping the problem would disappear on its own. It happens to be the country's commercial capital that cannot countenance such a situation. In fact the problem of inundation of Chittagong city has been a perennial one, and only lip service has been given to it by all the city mayors, no matter which political party they belonged to.
We recall that the number one election pledge of the current mayor before the city election four years ago was curing the city's longstanding problem of water logging. Regrettably, after four years precious little has been done though the mayor is not short on excuses which we are afraid will not cut much ice with the public. Moreover, we find his explanation of the current state of the city as "water congestion" and not water logging a cynical and cruel joke on the people of the city.
We would like to urge the mayor of Chittagong city to harness all the resources to cure Chittagong's woes permanently without resorting to trivial semantic subterfuge. Shortage of fund cannot be an excuse when the most important outlet of the country, the port, remains totally non-operational for the last four days.
