‘Explain why Khaleda shouldn’t be granted bail in Cumilla arson case’

The High Court today issued a notice asking the government to explain why BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia should not be granted bail in an arson case filed in Cumilla.
The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman came up with the order after accepting an appeal filed by Khaleda Zia against a lower court order that rejected her bail petition in the case.
The case was filed with Chauddagram Police Station under Special Power Act for setting fire on a covered van in Chauddagram area of Cumilla during an anti-government agitation on January 25, 2015.
A Cumilla court on September 13 this year rejected the bail petition of Khaleda Zia in this case, Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star.
He also said Khaleda Zia was not granted bail by the High Court in this case.
Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali appeared for Khaleda Zia while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam argued for the state.
