Suranjit Sengupta: At a glance

Suranjit Sengupta, one of the country’s political doyens, died today at the age of 72. He was the Awami League lawmaker from Sunamganj-2 constituency and a member of the party's advisory council. Here is the brief biography of the veteran leader.

Birth:

Suranjit Sengupta was born on May 5, 1945, in Anawarpur area of Sunajmganj. His father’s name is Devendra Nath Sengupta and mother’s name Sumati Bala Sengupta.

Education:

He passed BA (honours) and MA from Dhaka University. He also received LLB degree from Central Law College.

He has efficiency and decency in many languages including Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Hindi and Urdu.

Profession:

He started his career as a lawyer after completing his institutional education. He was a member of Supreme Court Bar Council.

Politics:

Suranjit was involved in politics from his student life. In 1970, he was the member of the provincial council.

He was elected as members of the parliament in second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth, ninth and 10th Jatiya Sangsad.

He was the prime minister’s parliamentary affairs adviser in seventh Jatiya Sangsad.

Suranjit was also co-chairman of the parliamentary special committee to amend the country’s constitution in the ninth parliament (2009-2013).

He was also railway minister for a brief period. Due to a scam, Suranjit later reportedly resigned from his post.   

He was the ruling Awami League lawmaker from the Sunamganj-2 constituency in the tenth parliament and a member of the party's advisory council. Also, he was the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry.

Hobby:

Writing and playing cricket.
