Supreme Court upholds Khokhon’s bail, no bar to release

The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court order that granted bail to BNP leader Khairul Kabir Khokon in five criminal cases, clearing the way for his walkout from jail.

The HC order was upheld as the Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, passed a “no order” in five petitions filed by the government against the bail.

Sagir Hossain Leon, a lawyer for Khokon, told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for BNP leader Khokon to get released from the jail following the chamber judge’s order.

Earlier on June 4, the High Court granted ad-interim bail to Khokon for next six months in seven separate cases including the five criminal cases filed between 2007 and 2015.

Of the cases, two were filed with Gulshan and Kafrul police stations in Dhaka in 2007 on charge of extortion. Four were filed with Paltan Police Station and another was filed in in 2015 on charges of arson and vandalism.     

A Dhaka court on May 4 sent Khokon, a former general secretary of Dhaka University Central Students Union, to jail after he surrendered before it seeking bail in connection with 10 cases.
