Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today warned of stern action against the people who are spreading rumour on “human sacrifice” for Padma Bridge construction.

“The people who are spreading such rumour will not be spared and they must face punishment,” he said while talking to reporters after a programme at Setu Bhaban in Dhaka.

Quader, also general secretary of ruling Awami League, said the Bridge Division under the ministry has already talked to different intelligent agencies and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) to find out the people behind the rumour.

Besides, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also gave a directive to law enforcement agencies for taking steps in this regard, the minister said.

He, however, said the law enforcers have detained a person in this connection.

Quader, without mentioning any name, said they are now spreading rumours after a debacle in the December 30 national election and being failed to wage movement.

On July 9, the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, in a notice, urged the country people not to pay heed to the rumour about the need for a human sacrifice for the Padma Bridge project, reports UNB.

The ministry also said it has noticed that propaganda is being spread by a certain group on social media. "It's a rumour. Spreading such rumour is a criminal offence,” the ministry said.
