SC clears way for Rizvi’s remand

The Supreme Court today cleared the way for police to take BNP leader Rizvi Ahmed on remand for interrogation in a vandalism case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha stayed a High Court order that had halted a remand order for Rizvi, joint secretary general of BNP.

Additional Attorney General Momtaz Uddin Fakir and Rizvi’s lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told The Daily Star that police now can take Rizvi on a three-day remand in the case.

The apex court came up with the order in response to a government petition filed against the HC order.

Earlier on April 8 the HC stayed for a month, a three-day remand of Rizvi under police custody in a vandalism case.

Moved by a writ petition, the HC also issued a rule upon the government explain by two weeks as to why the remand order against Rizvi should not be declared illegal.

The bench of Justice Md Nuruzzaman and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order that stayed a previous Dhaka court’s remand order for the BNP leader for a month.

The remand order, in a vandalism case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police, was issued on March 31, Rizvi’s lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told The Daily Star.
