Rizvi criticises EC over ‘irregularities’

BNP today raised serious allegations against the Election Commission saying the constitutional body has bowed down to the evil will of the ruling Awami League.

“People didn’t see the EC’s role in stopping various irregularities and violence ahead of the municipal polls,” BNP Office Secretary Rizvi Ahmed said.

“The ruling party men have turned the election environment dreadful since the announcement of election schedule,” he alleged at a press briefing in BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters in Dhaka.

He also alleged that in the name of maintaining law and order situation, law enforcers are doing “excess” mainly in the municipalities where elections will be held.

Rizvi who was released on bail recently after staying 10 months in jail, mentioned names of different municipalities including Akhaura, Bagmara, citied examples of Akhaura, Tarabo, Munshiganj sadar,  Betagi and Dagonbhuiya where BNP’s mayoral candidates were harassed by the ruling party men and the law enforcing agencies.

He called upon people to vote in favour of the BNP nominated candidates braving the government’s conspiracy and oppression.
