Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has trashed claims that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is in “dire state” and said that she is getting more facility than she deserves at prison.

Responding to what BNP’s senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed earlier today that Khaleda cannot walk around now, Quader said: “Has he seen this with his own eyes? Is there any proof of such claims?”

“Khaleda Zia is getting more facility at jail than she deserves. Do any prisoner in the world gets to have a personal maid?” Quader told reporters in Comilla, our local correspondent reports.

On the note of Khaleda’s hospitalisation, he said that she has denied admission in two state-sponsored hospitals out of political ambition.

“It is only to create a new political agenda that BNP is pressing for her hospitalisation in United Hospitals,” Quader added.

It has been five months in the passing that Khaleda has been serving time behind bars after being convicted in a corruption case.

Her physical ailment, what was shown as the official cause for skipping multiple hearings in another graft case, has been a topic of the political arena for the last few weeks. It gained momentum after news spread that Khaleda suffered a minor stroke.

But, government quarters said it was a drop in blood pressure that affected her.

The BNP, which has been complaining of shoddy prison conditions, has been demanding her immediate hospitalisation at United Hospitals in Dhaka.

The government had agreed to take the two-time former prime minister to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, to which Khaleda disagreed.
