30 BNP men injured as police charge baton, claims BNP

BNP today said police foiled a torch procession brought out by a group of their leaders and activists in Dhaka's Banani area this evening protesting the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in custody.

Talking to The Daily Star, BNP Assistant Office Secretary Syed Emran Saleh Prince claimed 30 BNP men were injured as police charged baton on them.

A group of nearly 150 BNP leaders and activists, arranged by Dhaka-North BNP brought out a procession with torch, from Banani kitchen market area around 7:00pm, said Emran Saleh.

Soon after the procession started, police chased them and charged batons, leaving 30 BNP men injured, he said.

They took first aid from different hospitals, said the BNP leader. He also said police detained two BNP activists from the spot.

Contacted, Barhan Uddin Rabbani, sub-inspector of Banani Police Station, told The Daily Star that a group of BNP men brought out a procession in Banani this evening blocking the road.

On information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed them, said the police official. He said there was no injury or arrest over this incident.
