Imprisoned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has denied to take treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) yet once again.

Mahbubul Islam, jailer of Old Dhaka Central Jail, told The Daily Star that the former prime minister refused to be taken to BSMMU this afternoon.

The hospital was ready to take her in and a cabin prepared for her, BSMMU Director Brig General Abdullah Al-Harun told The Daily Star.

“We were told that she will be brought here. We beefed up security and prepared a cabin for her. We have been informed she will not be coming,” he told UNB.

The issue of Khaleda’s treatment, whether it will be according to her preference or per jail code, has been an issue between the government and the BNP for some time.

On March 4, at a meeting, the government assured the BNP of taking all necessary actions to ensure proper treatment of its chief Khaleda Zia.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been in jail since a special court convicted her in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8 last year.

WHY KHALEDA IS IN JAIL?

Khaleda Zia landed in jail back in February after her conviction in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case, where she was handed a five-year jail term.

Later, she was also convicted in Zia Charitable Trust graft case and handed a seven-year term.

In the appeal against her punishment in Zia Orphanage graft, a higher court increased her punishment to 10 years in prison.
