Jubo League man stabbed to death in Mymensingh

A Jubo League man was stabbed to death by miscreants in Char Haripur area of Mymensingh city today, police said.

Deceased Rezaul Karim Russel, 34, was a member of Jubo League's Mymensingh district unit. He was also a former vice president of the district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student front of ruling Awami League (AL).

Russel, son of Jalal Uddin, was stabbed indiscriminately by unidentified criminals around 2:20am, our correspondent reports quoting Md Mahmudul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.

Police suspected that the murder took place following an internal feud in Jubo League, the youth front of the AL.

Jesmin Akter Poly, elder sister of the victim, said he left her Amlapara residence after having iftar yesterday but did not return his home in the upazila.

Later around 2:30am, his family was informed that Russel was killed, she said.

Russel had a long-standing feud with Abdullah Al Mamun Arif, a former president of Mymensingh city unit of BCL, his family alleged.

During last Ramadan in 2018, Arif’s followers attacked Russel and threatened for his life several times, the victim's Anwar Hossain Lemon said adding "I am sure that Arif and his men are involved behind the killing".

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Mymensingh Range) Nibash Chandra Majhi said that he has instructed police to take immediate steps to bring the killers to book.

The body was kept at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
