Ex-lawmaker, 200-plus followers sued over vandalising AL party office in Gaibandha

A case has been filed against local Awami League leader Abul Kalam Azad, also former lawmaker of Gaibandha-4 constituency, and more than 200 of his followers for vandalising the Gobindaganj upazila AL office in Gaibandha on February 20.

According to the case statement, the accused carried out the attack at the party office in a pre-planned manner in a bid to create panic among party men, reports our local correspondent.

Altamasul Islam, a member of Gobindaganj upazila AL unit, filed the case against 33 named people including Kalam and between 150 and 200 unnamed people with Gobindaganj Police Station on Thursday night, said AKM Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of the police station, yesterday.

Talking to our Bogura correspondent, Altamasul said Abul Kalam Azad, also current president of the Gobindaganj upazila AL unit, used to be absent from the party office as he was angry that he did not get the nomination from the party in the national elections in 2018.

Azad and his supporters attacked the party office to create panic among party men, added Altamasul.

Quoting the case statement, OC Mehedi Hasan further said Azad's followers vandalised the party office on February 20 and tore the posters and banners containing photos of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

This correspondent could not reach with Abul Kalam Azad for his comments despite repeated calls.
