AL to name its candidates tomorrow: Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said his party will finalise its candidates for the mayoral race in elections to two city corporations in Dhaka tomorrow.

The names of the prospective AL candidates will be known after a meeting of the party's Local Government Nomination Board scheduled to be held at prime minister's official residence Gono Bhaban at 6:00 pm on Saturday, Quader said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair the meeting, he added while addressing at a press conference at AL president’s political office in Dhanmondi of Dhaka.

Yesterday, Incumbent Mayor Sayeed Khokon collected nomination papers from Awami League to contest in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election scheduled to be held on January 30.

On Wednesday, M Atiqul Islam, who is the incumbent mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, collected AL nomination form for election to the DNCC while lawmakers Fazle Nur Tapash and Haji Mohammad Selim bought nomination papers for Dhaka south city.

DSCC, DNCC polls schedule

The elections to Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation will be held on January 30.

The last date for submitting nomination papers is December 31 and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is January 9. The EC will scrutinise nomination papers on January 2.

AL-backed Sayeed Khokon and Annisul Huq won the previous mayoral polls to the DSCC and DNCC, held on April 28, 2015.

The party nominated businessperson Atiqul Islam for a mayoral by-polls held in February this year after the post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
