The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court verdict that granted bail to former Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in a murder case, clearing the way of his walk out of jail.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after dismissing an appeal filed by the government challenging the HC verdict.

Following the apex court order, there is no legal bar for Rana to get released from jail, his lawyer Advocate Rusho Mostafa told The Daily Star.

On June 19, the High Court gave permanent bail to Rana in the murder case, clearing the way for his release from prison.

A day later, the Supreme Court stayed until July 1 the verdict following a government petition seeking a stay on the HC judgment.

Jubo League activists -- Shamim and Mamun -- were killed on the orders of Rana and his brother Jahidur Rahman Khan Kakon in Tangail in July 2012, the investigation officer of the case said.

Mamun’s father Abdul Aziz lodged the murder case with a Tangail court on July 9 in 2013 against 13 people, said Rusho, adding that Tangail Model Police Station recorded the case on September 21 that year as per the Tangail court order. Amanur was shown arrested in the case in May last year.
