The physical condition of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is “good,” Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Majid Bhuiyan, director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), said today.

Referring to a medical board report, the BSMMU director told reporters that there was no reason for the BNP leader to get admitted in the hospital for treatment as he is not suffering from any new complication.

Led by Dr Rafiqul Alam, chairman of nephrology department at the BSMMU, the six-member medical board was formed to check-up Fakhrul’s physical condition, he added.

Earlier at 7:45am, Kashimpur Jail-2 authorities brought Fakhrul to the hospital for check-up and to treat his stomach related complexity, Nashir Ahmed, jailer of Kashimpur Jail-2, said.

He was sent back to the jail around 3:10pm, Nasir added.

Meanwhile, Fakhrul’s wife Rahat Ara said her husband, at the age of 65, has been suffering from multiple diseases including (carotid arteries) blockage in the nerve of his neck, blood pressure, diabetes and heart complications.

She also said Fakhrul needed to go abroad for better treatment.

Jubo Dal Vice-President Farhad Hossain Azad, an aide of Fakhrul, said the BNP acting secretary general lost 15 kg weight in the last 15 days.

"We're worried about his health condition.”

On January 6, detectives picked up Fakhrul near Jatiya Press Club at Topkhana Road.

After a programme at the Press Club, Fakhrul took shelter inside it to avoid arrest following party chief Khaleda Zia’s January 5 announcement of enforcing countrywide nonstop blockade as police barred her from coming out of her Gulshan office to attend a showdown in the city.

Earlier, Fakhrul was arrested thrice and was implicated in more than 70 cases.
