Distribution of electoral symbols begins; Ivy gets boat, Shakhawat paddy sheaf

Calling the party men for unity, Awami League mayoral nominee Selina Hayat Ivy today said she will accept the outcome of Narayanganj City Corporation polls slated for December 22.

Ivy said this while talking to journalists after getting boat as the electoral symbol as the election commission distributed the symbols among the mayoral and councilor candidates starting around 10:00am, reports a Narayanganj correspondent.

With the distribution of the electoral symbols, formal campaign for the election by the mayoral and councilor candidates starts.

“Ivy is separated from boat and boat is not separated from Ivy,” she said with a hope the people will re-elect her giving a chance to develop Narayanganj.

Shakhawat Hossain gets sheaf of paddy

BNP-backed mayoral candidate for NCC Shakhawat Hossain Khan got sheaf of paddy as electoral symbol.

While talking to journalists, Shakhawat alleged that Ivy is not abiding by electoral code of conduct as government employees of the city corporation were seen taking part in her campaign processions, he said.

He said he wants to keep faith on the EC and urged it to step up measures for holding a free and fair election.   

Among others, Jahangir Alam, BNP city unit president, TM Kamal, general secretary, and two former lawmakers were present with him.

Meanwhile, other mayoral candidates Rashed Ferdous of Kollyan Party got electoral symbol wrist watch, Kamal Prodhan of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) umbrella, Advocate Mahbubur Rahman of Bilobi Workers Party spade, Mufti Masum Billah of Islami Andolon Bangladesh hand-fan and Mufti Ezharul Huq of Islami Oikkya Jote got “minar”.

Returning officer Nuruzzaman Talukdar distributed the symbols among the mayoral and councilor candidates on the first floor at the Narayanganj Club.

Monitoring law and order: Returning officer

“We have formed a cell to maintain law and order. And I will observe and monitor the situation,” the returning official told journalists after ending distribution of the electoral symbols.

On December 8, the chief election commissioner will talk to the candidates in Narayanganj city, he said adding that a central evaluation meeting will also be held on December 10 in Dhaka where the law and order situation will be discussed.

“Even after that, if any development happens I will inform my higher authorities and take steps according to their decisions,” the EC official said.
