EC formation: Hold talks with civil society members, BJP to president

Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andalib Rahman Partho today called upon President Abdul Hamid to hold more talks with nonpartisan and honest people in the civil society to form an acceptable Election Commission.

Alongside the talks with political parties, the president should hold dialogue with neutral, honest and qualified people in the civil society to form an acceptable and neutral Election Commission, Partho told journalist after holding talks with the president at his Ganabhaban residence this afternoon.   

Partho also proposed that eight election commissioners for each eight division and a chief election commissioner should be appointed to bring dynamism in the activities of the commission.

A 10-member delegation led by Partho met the president and placed their proposals to meet the prevailing political disorder over the Election Commission.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh Trikat Federation placed a 19-point proposal before the president to form the commission with nonpartisan dignitaries.

A 10-member delegation led by the party Chairman Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari placed the proposals during the talks.

The proposals include forming the new election commission with nonpartisan journalist (below 50 years old), former Dhaka University vice chancellor or head of its any department and a neutral, honest and dignified person.

He proposed that a former chief justice or judges of the Appellate Division or a notable freedom fighter or believer in the spirit of the Liberation War could be the commissioner of the Election Commission.

During the talks, he urged the president to take initiatives to set up a separate and independent office to strengthen activities of the constitutional body.
