Govt to move against stay on Khaleda arson cases tomorrow: AG

The government has recently filed four separate petitions with the Supreme Court seeking stay on the High Court orders that halted the trial proceedings against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in four separate vandalism and arson cases.

The stay petitions will be moved before the chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC tomorrow, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star today.

Following separate bail petitions filed by Khaleda, the HC on April 13 stayed the trial proceedings against her in the four vandalism and arson cases and also issued four separate rules asking the government to explain why the proceedings of the cases should not be scrapped.

Among the four cases, three were filed with Darussalam Police Station and another case was filed with Jatrabari Police Station in 2015 during anti-government agitation enforced by BNP-led alliance.

Trial courts later took cognisance of the charges of the cases after police submitted charge sheets to the court, he said.

Earlier this month, Khaleda filed four petitions with the HC challenging the legality of the trial proceedings on the cases.
