BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called upon the countrymen to forge a national unity against Rampal power plant project for the sake of the country’s independence and sovereignty.

“We have no alternative but to forge a national unity against the power plant for the sake of our independence and sovereignty,” Fakhrul said while addressing a function at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity this afternoon.

No discussion has yet been held in the parliament over the much-talked about Rampal power plant project, he said.

The opposition party in the parliament is a “domestic one” and so it did not pay any heed to the issue, he added.

Taking adverse impact of the coal based power plant project under consideration, several western countries have stayed aside from such project, the BNP leader said.

“Indian roles behind the power plant as “aggression” to the country’s independence and sovereignty, Fakhrul said.

He said the Indian government has stayed aside from the coal-based power plant in the face of protest of its people while Bangladesh government is determined to implement the project near the Sundarbans.

“Awami League, with an aim to hang on to power, has given a commitment to India to implement the project there,” he alleged.
