Jatiya Party Secretary General Ruhul Amin Howladar today said that his party wants formulation of a law to constitute an acceptable Election Commission to oversee all elections in a free and fair manner.

“We underscored the need for a specific law to constitute the Election Commission and urged the president to take an initiative to pass the law in the parliament,” Howlader said after holding talks with President Abdul Hamid.

Howladar was addressing a press conference at the party’s central office in Dhaka this afternoon.

Earlier, an 18-member delegation led by the party chief HM Ershad held talks with the president at Bangabhaban over formation of new Election Commission.

Claiming the talks as fruitful, Howladar said, “We have faith on the president and hope that he would take an effective move to meet our demand.”

Mistrust and distance have been created among the political parties centring election in the country, Howladar said. “We believe that the mistrust and distance would be eliminated through the talks.”

JP hopes that the president will form an acceptable search committee based on an outcome of the talks that will help to form an acceptable, skilled and competent Election Commission, Hawladar said.

“A national unity may be forged if an acceptable Election Commission is formed through the dialogue,” he said.

The opposition party in the parliament also put forward a five-point proposal to make the dialogue successful, he said.
