Terming the clash between the two groups of Awami League as an “untoward incident,” Atiqul Islam said it happened due to a misunderstanding among themselves.

“This is not expected at all and it happened following a misunderstanding within ourselves as it was a big program,” the Dhaka North City Corporation Mayoral Candidate (DNCC) said while talking to the journalists in front of Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) in Mohakhali.

Atiqul also said that the senior leaders of the party have been informed about the incident while urging the party men to have patience.

The clash took place between two groups of Al activists during the election campaigning of Atiqul today.

The incident took place at Shaheed Dr Fazle Rabbi Park of Gulshan-1 around 12:15pm when supporters of Jahidur Rahman Dulal, Al’s rebel candidate for the councilor post of Ward 20, arrived at the spot chanting slogans.

Md Nasir–incumbent councilor and Awami League nominee for the post—and his supporters were already present at the venue along with Atiqul, reports our correspondent from the spot.

As Dulal’s supporters arrived, a scuffle took place between his and Nasir’s supporters. They threw chairs at each other, our correspondent reports quoting witnesses.

Whether Dulal was also present during the incident could not be known immediately.

Later, Atiqul and his supporters left the spot in a procession as part of his campaign.
