Yesterday, Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student front of ruling Awami League, pounced on students demonstrating at the door of Dhaka University’s vice chancellor.

Videos of the assault where even the girls were not spared went viral overnight and condemnations flooded the social media platforms. About 50 students were injured, some hospitalised.

It all started with demonstration against Dhaka University’s affiliation with seven colleges, what the general students wanted the university to get rid of.

Chhatra League foiled one such demonstration a few days ago, fueling the students to bar the vice chancellor to demand proper punishment of the responsible assaulters.

Things took a dramatic turn yesterday, when Chhatra League stepped in to free the vice chancellor from the cordon of the demonstrating students, using fists and feet.
