BNP denied of permission on security ground: DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) authorities today denied BNP of permission for holding a rally at the Suhrawardi Udyan in Dhaka on security ground.

"It’s not favourable for the public safety and thus, BNP was denied of the permission," DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman told The Daily Star this evening.

Responding to a query, the DMP official said intelligence report is taken before granting any permission for such programme.

"The report so far we gained is not favourable for the public safety," Rahman added.

BNP, the political archrival of the ruling Awami League, has been seeking the government's nod to hold the rally since its Chairperson Khaleda Zia was sent to jail on a graft charge on February 8.

Earlier in the day, a four-member team of BNP also met Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner seeking the permission to hold the rally tomorrow but denied of any positive hints.
