BNP today demanded that the government declare flash flood affected haor areas as disaster prone.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also alleged corruption and irregularities in distributing aid for the victims.

Pointing to his recent visit at different flood affected areas at Netrokona, Fakhrul said he saw thousands of people “are passing their days with untold sufferings including shortage of food”.

He placed eight-point demand to mitigate the sufferings of haor people which include preparing list of flood victims in the haor areas and distribution of relief until harvest of new crops.

The demands also include waiving interest of agriculture loan and sanctioning new agricultural loan.

In reply to a question, Fakhrul said the government is trying to tame Hefajat-e-Islam for gaining petty political interests.

In reply to another question Fakhrul also said BNP is always ready for national election. The only thing which is necessary is an election-time neutral administration and a neutral EC.

“We must participate in the election if the two things are ensured,” he said.
