DU recommends suspension of 6 BCL men, expulsion for one

CU suspends 8 BCL activists

Dhaka University (DU) authorities today recommended expulsion of one and suspension of six activists of the university unit Bangladesh Chhatra League.

A DU disciplinary board took the decision at a meeting with VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman in the chair, said DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani.

They were suspended for their involvement in assaulting Ehsan Rafiq, a student of  Salimullah Muslim Hall, on February 6.

"We made the recommendation after scrutinsing the report of probe body formed over the incident which found involvement of the students in that incident,” he said adding that the recommendation would be sent to the syndicate for approval.

The board recommended suspension of two years for the BCL activists Ruhul Amin Bappery, Fardin Ahmed Mugdho,Samiul Islam Sami, Ahsan Ullah andMehedi Hasan Himel for beating up the student while one-year suspension of the BCL hall unit vice-president Ariful Islam for instigating his fellow activists.

Assistant secretary Omar Faruk, who initiated the attack on Ehsan, has been recommended for expulsion.

Earlier, on February 6, the BCL activists beat up Ehsan Rafiq, a second-year student of disaster management and science department, leaving his right eye grievously injured as he asked Omar Faruk to return the calculator that the latter borrowed from him three months back.

CU suspends eight BCL activists

Meanwhile, Chittagong University (CU) authorities today suspended eight activists of the university unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for two years.

They were suspended for vandalising the university proctor office, attacking two journalists on February 20 and for abducting a student for ransom on February 22, CU Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury told our university correspondent.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Board of Residence Health and Disciplinary Committee with Vice-Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury in the chair, the proctor said.

The BCL men were also served a show cause notice asking why they would not be expelled and asked to reply within seven days, he also said adding that the suspension will be effective from today.

The BCL men are Saidul Islam Sayed, also a student of Public Administration department, Lokman Hossain of Economics department, Kanak Saha Joy of Institute of Modern Language & Linguistic department and MahfuzulHaqueLotas of Dramatics department.
