BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that his party will go on tough agitation if the government hikes the prices of gas.

“Our position is clear. We will not accept the hike in gas price. We will protest,” he said at a press conference in the party’s Nayapaltan centra office.

“We have already said that the attempt to increase gas price is illogical. Low and middle-income people will be badly affected if the gas price is hiked,” he added.

He pointed out that several political parties and social organisations have already protested the planned hike to say that BNP will also take its own course if the people’s interest is ignored.

Reflecting on the December 30 national election, Fakhrul said: “Not only the US, reputed media like BBC, Al Jazeera, The Guardian and New York Times have already said that no election was held in Bangladesh on that day.”

Also, different newspapers in India also wrote that no election was held in Bangladesh, the BNP leader said.

Blaming the government for controlling Bangladesh’s mass media, Fakhrul said despite this adverse situation, many mass media have done a lot over the December 30 national election.

BNP TO OBSERVE WEEKLONG INDEPENDENCE DAY PROGRAMMES

BNP also chalked out a seven-day programme, including a colourful rally in the capital, to celebrate Independence Day.

Fakhrul also announced the programmes at the press conference office after a joint meeting of the leaders of BNP and its associate bodies.

As part of the programmes, he said, the party men will bring out an Independence Day rally from their Nayapaltan central office on March 27.

Besides, the party's district, upazila and municipality units across the country will also take out rallies at their convenient time on this occasion, he said.

BNP senior leaders will place wreaths at the National Mausoleum in Savar in the morning on March 26, and later, they will place wreaths at the shrine of late BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.

BNP will hoist national and party flags atop its offices, including the Nayapaltan central one, in the morning on the occasion.

Fakhrul said their party will hold a discussion on March 25 at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on the occasion.
