BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today alleged that the Election Commission (EC) is being run by a secretary who maintains close connection with a certain political party.

“EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed, who runs the Election Commission, continues his office till 4:00pm and then goes to an office of a certain political party,” Fakhrul said this while addressing a programme at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

The office which the EC secretary visits is used as a place for electoral policy making led by HT Imam, political adviser to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Fakhrul said.

Claiming that HT Imam used to always meet the Election Commission before every elections, Fakhrul said this very person held a meeting with the EC officials before holding of the Gazipur City Corporation elections.

In recent time, HT Imam endorsed that he has done the same before holding of the general elections on January 5, 2014, the BNP leader claimed.

Fakhrul blasted the Election Commission for its utter failure in holding the elections in a free, fair and impartial manner under its supervision.

He also lambasted the government for its indulgence in corruption, misdeed and mismanagement, alleging that all the state organs have been destroyed in a planned way.

"The overall condition of the government is very pitiable and it is now on the brink of ruin. Awami League will never be able to backpedal from the road of the ruin," he said.

Referring to deterioration of the law and order situation on the university campuses across the country, Fakhrul said, “The government is running the country at the gunpoint by using all the state mechanisms”.

Chhatra League men have taken all educational institutions under their absolute grip, the BNP leader said.

Meanwhile, an anarchical situation is prevailing in the health sector, he said.

Fakhrul also criticised Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman for imposing restriction on the movement of outsiders on the DU campus.

The DU authorities have shattered all the past images of the famous educational institution, he said.

About BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's release from jail, he said the countrymen must bring the party chief out of the jail through waging a movement at appropriate time.

"History says, people's sympathy always goes to the victim and the countrymen must stand beside Khaleda Zia," he expressed his optimism.

The student leaders of 1990 arranged the programme demanding immediate proper treatment and unconditional release of imprisoned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
