High Court verdict on Biswajit murder case August 6

The High Court will deliver its verdict on August 6 over the death references and appeals in the sensational Biswajit Das murder, where the man was hacked death under broad daylight in Dhaka by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.

The bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty fixed the date today after concluding hearing on the death references and appeals.

On December 18, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced eight activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, to death and 13 others to life imprisonment for killing tailor-shop employee Biswajit Das.

Fourteen appeals were filed with the HC by the convicts challenging the lower court verdict against them in the case.

Biswajit, 24, was hacked to death in public on his way to his tailoring shop at Shakharibazar in Old Dhaka during a countrywide road-blockade programme on December 9, 2012.

Taking him as a picketer, the BCL activists of Jagannath University unit swooped on him in front of Bahadur Shah Park and hacked him with machetes and beat him with iron rods and hockey sticks.

Police pressed charges against the 21 accused on March 5, 2013 and the tribunal framed charges against them on June 2 of that year.

Of the convicts, eight are now in jail while 13 others on the run.
