Govt will be successful finally in 16th amendment case: Law minister

The government will be “successful finally” over the case on the 16th amendment to the constitution, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq told the parliament today. 

“I still believe we will be successful inshallah in the legal step over the case,” he told the parliament in reply to a supplementary question from Jatiya Party MP Fakhrul Imam. 

The opposition lawmaker said the Supreme Court in its 16th amendment verdict termed parliament dysfunctional. 

He also wanted to know what the law minister is thinking after the judgment of the Appellate Division of the SC.

In reply, Anisul said he is still hopeful to empower parliament in impeaching the judges on grounds of misconduct or incapacity.

The SC on July 3 rejected the government’s appeal against the High Court verdict that had declared the 16th amendment to the constitution illegal.

In 2014, the government amended the constitution to restore parliament’s authority to impeach judges on grounds of misconduct or incapacity.
