The government has driven the last nail in its coffin by denying bail to party Chairperson Khaleda Zia, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.

Fakhrul said this while announcing a countrywide fresh agitation programme demanding an unconditional release of Khaleda from jail.

The demonstrations will be organised at all the districts and cities across the country and thana-level units in Dhaka tomorrow, he said at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters.

The party will also hold a mass gathering at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Thursday (March 29) to press home their demand, he added.

Fakhrul came up with the remark after the Supreme Court today stayed until May 8 the High Court order that granted bail to Khaleda in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in which she was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

The HC on March 12 granted her four months’ bail on four grounds: a short sentence of five years, health condition, her facing trial, and that the case records have reached the court.

Khaleda landed in prison on February 8 after she was handed the five-year jail sentence by a Dhaka court for misappropriating a donation fund of the Zia Orphanage Trust.

Since February 8, BNP sought permission on three different occassions to organise a mass gathering at Suhrawardy Udyan of Dhaka but the concerned authorities did not approve it.
