Political opponent BNP today criticised the ruling Awami League for coming down hard on the World Bank, saying such a fracas might “upset the development partner of Bangladesh”.

“Experts are already fearing a strain in ties between Bangladesh and its largest development partner,” Rizvi Ahmed, senior joint secretary of the party, said in a press briefing.

“Hundreds of World Bank projects are under development in the country now – in all sectors. But after the Canadian court ruling on Padma bridge issue the Awami League leaders are coming down hard on the global lender,” he said at Nayapaltan.

“The investigation into the tax-free vehicles of World Bank is the outcome of the government’s rage over the institution,” Rizvi alleged. “Even then, the WB has not budged from its position.”
