18 DU BCL men suspended, 1 expelled

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) suspended 18 activists of its Dhaka University unit over factional clashes at Salimullah Muslim Hall and Sir AF Rahman Hall.

Another BCL man was expelled from the organisation for the same charge, said a BCL press release signed by its central president Saifur Rahman Sohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain.

According to the release, seven BCL activists -- Masud, Pranta, Sajib, Shuvo, Riad, Rafiqul and Sajib of SM Hall -- were suspended for a factional clash at the hall premises on April 20.

Another activist, Salman, a second year student of Bijoy Ekattar Hall, was expelled in this connection, the release read.

Other suspended BCL men are Raju Ahmed, Rashed Rajon, Manjur Ahmed Rana, Salauddin Ahmed Saju, Saddam Hossain, Apple Mahmud, Rashed, Nahid, Rasel, Faruk and Jamil of Sir AF Rahman Hall.

On April 20, two BCL factions – led by BCL’s SM Hall unit president Tahsin Ahmed Rasel and general secretary Mehedi Hasan Taposh -- clashed over “grabbing seats” at the dormitory. The clash left at least 12 students injured.

On April 6, two BCL factions backed by Sir AF Rahman Hall unit president and general secretary clashed following a dispute during watching a Bangladesh-Sri Lanka cricket match injuring five activists.

On April 23, five BCL activists of the hall locked into another clash following a dispute over a trifling matter injuring at least eight students.
