Police made remarkable progress: IGP

But he gives no detail; takes salute at passing out parade of 34th batch of new officers

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandakar yesterday said police have made remarkable progress in the investigation into the murder case of Rajshahi University Professor AKM Shafiul Islam.

“The murder case is our top priority, and we are hopeful of positive results,” he said at the passing out ceremony of the 34th batch of outside cadet sub-inspectors-2013 at Bangladesh Police Academy (BPA) in Sardah.

“Police officials have informed me that remarkable progress has been made in the case,” he said without mentioning the details.

Addressing as the chief guest, Khandakar said he had a meeting with senior officials of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police regarding the case and other law and order issues.

Responding to a query on militant outfit Ansar Al Islam Bangladesh committing the murder, he said, “We have expertise in militancy, and we hope that we can bring those who claimed responsibility of the murder on a facebook page to justice.”

Meanwhile, a police team led by Sub-inspector of Motihar Police Station Masud Rana searched the bushes in front of the murdered professor's rented house in Choddopai area. Rana said the killers might have left things like mobile phones there. He said three police teams were sent to Natore and Naogaon looking for a blacksmith named Sadhon as the name was inscribed on the machete used for killing Shafiul Islam.

The sociology professor was killed by unidentified assailants in front of his house on November 15.
