PM seeks investment from Bangladeshis in UK
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the Bangladeshi expatriates, especially that of Sylhet diaspora, to invest more in Bangladesh, including the energy sector.
She made the request when a five-member delegation of All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), led by Lord Sheikh, met her at Hotel Hilton on Park Lane in London yesterday afternoon.
In a joint press briefing after the meeting, PM's Press Secretary AKM Shamim Chowdhury and Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told reporters that the meeting discussed how to increase trade with and investment in Bangladesh from the Sylhet community living in the UK.
Referring to the maritime boundary verdicts over Myanmar and India, Hasina said such verdicts have opened up the new door of investment, especially in the energy sector. “The UK companies are equally welcomed to participate and compete for gas and oil exploration in the Bay of Bengal,” she said.
When the APPG members lauded Hasina’s role in girl education and women empowerment, the prime minister said Bangladesh is a role model for girl and women development.
Apprising the delegation members about Bangladesh’s current overall situation, Hasina said now Bangladesh has got a stable vibrant society where business has been thriving.
Responding to Baroness Monzila Pola Uddin's request of taking more effective steps both at national and international levels to highlight the atrocities and rape committed by the Pakistani occupation forces and their cohorts during the Liberation War.
In reply, Hasina said the International Crimes Tribunal is one of the tools to address such atrocities and genocide committed in 1971.
Rushanara Ali MP, Lord Curen Faridul, Baroness Monzila Pola Uddin and Lord Tarek Ahmed were the other members of the APPG.
