Over 8kg gold seized at Ctg airport

Customs recovered 76 gold bars weighing 8.86 kilogrammes from two vacuum cleaners owned by two passengers at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong today.

None was arrested in this connection, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting Mosear Rahman, assistant commissioner (AC) of the airport customs.

The AC said the two passengers --  Md Faisal Shikder, 35, of Fatikchhari upazila; and Md Iskander, 34, of Raujan upazila in Chittagong -- reached the airport from by Air Arabia flights on June 27 and June 29.

They came from Sharjah city of United Arab Emirates (UAE) country.

But the customs officials did not allow the duo to take their vacuum cleaners with them on suspicion that they were carrying something inside the machines as those were too heavy, the customs officer said.

"The two vacuum cleaners were too heavy but the customs officials could not find anything till yesterday. Then, we decided to break the machines and ultimately found 76 gold bars," Mosear said.

The estimated price of the gold bars is Tk 3.80 crore, he added.

Asked whether the customs authorities will take any action, Mosear said they are going to lodge general diary in this connection.
