Hundreds of workers of a factory in Chattogram city staged a demonstration today morning, demanding their due salaries for last two months.

More than 400 workers of Golden Son Limited, one of the county's leading engineering companies, blocked Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway for half an hour since 9:00am, our staff correspondent reports.

According to the demonstrators, they gathered in front of the factory gate in the morning as the authorities had earlier announced the salaries would be disbursed today, but they were not paid as promised.

Later, the workers withdrew the demonstration after police and the authorities concerned assured them of giving the salaries for March and April by May 20, said Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli Police Station.

When contacted, the company's manager (marketing) Omar Haider told The Daily Star that the factory could not pay salaries to the workers as it was closed since the country went on shutdown due to coronavirus.

"Salaries of March and April will be paid by May 20," he said.

The workers joined their work after the factory reopened in late April.
